Tall timber and the grandeur of Rocky Mountain national park geyser country are the inspiration for Disney's Wilderness Lodge.

A sun-drenched atrium dominated by 60-foot lodgepole pine timbers and a massive stone fireplace helps
recapture the romance of rustic, century-old architecture with a contemporary flair, bringing the wilderness
world of nearly 100 years ago 2,000 miles to Florida lakes and forest lands.

One of Disney's "deluxe" category resorts, the lodge is hidden away on the shores of Bay Lake surrounded by towering pine, cypress and oak forests. The 728-room hideaway is accessible by boat across Seven Seas
Lagoon to Magic Kingdom and by bus to all Walt Disney World theme parks, hotels and attractions.

Warm tones of brown, green and beige create a cozy, woodland feeling in the guestrooms. An old-fashioned patchwork quilt, artwork depicting the mystery of the old West and a light-wood armoire etched with mountain scenes adorn the rooms. Most rooms include a balcony with views of waterfalls, "geysers," courtyards, Bay Lake
or the surrounding woods.

The resort features a volcanic meadow with bubbling color pools, babbling brooks and geysers spewing misty streams up to 100 feet into the air beside the swimming pool and white sand beaches.

Though conditions during the two-year construction project didn't match the harsh, subzero climate when Old Faithful Inn was created by craftsmen more than 90 years ago, forging Wilderness Lodge out of the Florida landscape was no small feat. Tons of granite flagstones and hundreds of giant lodgepole pines from the West
were brought in to re-create the authentic atmosphere of America's national park lodges.

A soaring, log-framed main lobby is the centerpiece of the complex. Massive six-story-high bundled log columns
help support roof dormers that bathe the multicolored wood and stone floor below in natural light. Four massive chandeliers with torch-cut scenes of Indians and buffalo, topped with glowing teepees, grace the lobby.
Two 55-foot-tall handcarved totem poles -- the "eagle" and "raven" -- were inspired by Northwest Indians.

A majestic, 82-foot-tall, three-sided stone fireplace re-creates a 2-billion-year geological record of the earth with fossilized remains of prehistoric animal and plant life. Colorful rock strata layers are re-created in the proportions they occur in the Grand Canyon.

The culture and beauty of the West is showcased in the artwork at the lodge. The oldest culture to be honored
in the hotel is the Native American, with artifacts from tribes such as the Cheyenne, the Crow, the Sioux and
the Blackfoot. The era of exploration is represented by maps from the great Western survey teams plus
sketches and watercolors from artists such as Karl Bodmer and George Catlin.

Guests are invited to explore porches, the Continental Divide lobby bar, the library and other intimate spaces
that are tucked away within the lobby and six-story guest wings which surround a themed water recreation area.

A bubbling hot spring in the main lobby expands into a geothermal area outside the building. The water flows
under a picturesque window wall to become Silver Creek in the upper courtyard. The quiet, contemplative creek widens and is transformed into a roaring waterfall which plummets 15 feet past Overlook Point, another
traditional National Park icon, and widens again in the swimming area.

A kiddie pool and hot and cold spas complete the swimming area which then flows toward Bay Lake. The
excitement is capped off by steaming color pools and an Old Faithful-style geyser that erupts at regular intervals.

The serene setting of Disney's Wilderness Lodge is complemented by unequaled epicurean experiences like
Artist Point, a fine-dining restaurant featuring traditional Northwestern specialties such as cedar-planked
salmon, pan-roasted scallops and grilled beef tenderloin. The eatery is adorned with grandiose murals
celebrating landscapes of the great Northwest.

The nearby Territory Lounge pays homage to the trappers, explorers and survey parties who led the country's
move westward. Roaring Fork Snacks and Arcade offers grilled sandwiches in a cafeteria-style setting.

Wood-roasted, smoked, grilled and barbecued cuisine can be found at Whispering Canyon Cafe -- a family-style,
all-you-can-eat restaurant with an American West motif.

The artistic wilderness theme is also captured at Cub's Den, the lodge's kids recreation and dining club; the
retail shop; the arcade; and the Trout Pass poolside bar.

Preferred access to Disney's 5 championship golf courses

Boats can be hired from Teton Boat & Bike Rental - water-mouse, canopy boats, pontoon boats & bicycles can be rented by the day, hour or half-hour.  I rented a water-mouse for half-hour which cost $18.  You can use the boat around Bay Lake & also through to the Seven Seas Lagoon outside the Magic Kingdom - a wonderful view of the castle!.

Lodge tours

Complimentary tours available daily.  Ask at Guest services.

Flag family

We were the 'flag family' one morning during our stay.  I had heard about this & when we arrived I asked at
Guest services & they had a few spaces left, so I could choose which morning we wanted. We met a CM in the lobby at 7:15am & went up on the roof (elevator to seventh floor, then about two flights of stairs!).  The view
from the roof is unbelievable, you can see The Magic Kingdom, Grand Floridian, Epcot.  You get to raise the flags, then get a certificate & a small photo frame, & a voucher for free breakfast (for everyone in your party) at
Roaring Forks. I believe this sometimes gets booked up very quickly, but they also have a flag lowering
ceremony in the evening which I think is less popular.

Electrical Water Pageant

The electrical water pageant is nightly 9:35pm on Bay Lake (weather permitting).

Geyser

The geyser erupts every hour on the hour from 7:00am until 10:00pm.

Whispering Canyon Cafe

"We hope to achieve a homelike feeling with old-fashioned cooking served family-style," said Katie Moore, restaurant food and beverage manager. "It's almost as if this is a way station where traders and barterers gather to share stories and enjoy a hearty meal."

Here, a pit-master chef divulges recipes from generations past as he serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes from a cast-iron skillet.

"We are using natural cooking techniques -- smoking, grilling and barbecuing -- which are consistent with the time period the lodge reflects," said Richard Jennings, chef. "We hope our guests will feel as though they are dining in another era."

Aromas of breakfast meats, home fries and scrambled eggs welcome hungry pioneers to breakfast. As high noon approaches, you can choose our family style skillet lunch or pick from our full a la carte menu featuring hot and cold sandwiches, salads and a full-choice dessert board.

Suppertime features an all-you-can-eat sampling of apple-roasted chicken, jumbo smoked turkey leg, maple garlic spareribs and grilled trail sausage, served with salads, vegetables, home-made breads and fruit cobbler for dessert.

The beauty and the mystery of the American Northwest is recalled
at Artist Point -- a specialty restaurant decorated with dramatic landscape art from the era. The eatery offers an elegant yet casual dining experience with a light wood design, a high-beamed cathedral ceiling, and dormer windows allowing natural lighting to illuminate.
The windowed restaurant allows a panoramic view of the courtyard, waterfalls and Bay Lake.

Traditional Northwestern specialties include saut饤 elk sausage,
cedar-roasted wild king salmon, venison chops and pan-seared rainbow trout. Additional cuisine includes Angus beef, smoked
pork chops and smoked prime rib.

Chef Anette Grecchi said fire roasting and hard-wood grilling gives meats and fresh Pacific seafood a unique flavor. A Washington
State or Oregon wine completes the experience.

Typical menu items - (dinner) salmon, mussels, mushroom soup, salad, rainbow trout, pasta, beef, lamb chops, rib eye steak, berry cobler, sorbet, apple tart.

What will I find in my guest room?
Most have two queen-size beds, a table & chairs, TV, closet, nightstands, mini-safe & balcony.  Some rooms
have a queen-size bed & a bunk bed.  The bathrooms have separate vanity areas with double sinks. A
newspaper is delivered to your door every morning. Refrigerators are available for $10 per night.

Where are the best room locations?
Standard view rooms overlook the parking lot, but are close to the lobby.
Woods/Lodge view rooms are nice, especially those that overlook the lobby, although they can get a bit noisy, especially in the evening.
Pool/courtyard view rooms overlook the Silver Creek pool area, which can get noisy in the daytime. Those on
the first floor open out onto the pool area, which can be handy for families with children.
Rooms on the top floor have closed-in balconies which restrict the view. Rooms at the very far ends of each
wing are a fair walk from the lobby area, but are closer to the boat dock and beach area.
Soom rooms on the higher floors at the northwest end of each wing offer lovely lake views.
Most of the rooms with king beds are wheelchair accessible rooms, and have roll-in showers.
If you have a first floor room on the south (villas) side, you will have to go down in the elevator (or stairs) from
the lobby, which is actually the second floor. On the north side the first floor rooms are accessible via a ramp,
past Roaring Forks. Only certain woods view rooms on the north side offer views of the Magic Kingdom.

How many people do the rooms accommodate?
